31.10.2012 Travels with a Camera | Halloween | Highgate Cemetery
Have you been to the West side of Highgate Cemetery? It’s a beautiful, wild, overgrown, other-worldly place and definitely worth a visit. Especially at Halloween.
The West Cemetery is only accessible by tour and you can check out tour days and times on the cemetery website.
The tomb with the dog (top photo) is the last resting place of Tom Sayers, a famous bare-knuckled prize-fighter who to this day boasts the largest funeral in the history of the cemetery with press reports of over ten-thousand mourners in attendance, including Lion, his faithful dog who was chief mourner.
* Other famous people buried on the West side include Rossetti, His wife Elizabeth Siddal (the tour guide tells a wonderful story of romance and digging up manuscripts), Christina Rossetti, Alexander Litvinenko, Charles Landseer, Henry Gray, Michael Faraday, Catherine and Dora Dickens (wife & daughter of Charles), Charles Cruft, Jeremy Beadle and Beryl Bainbridge.
